Alfred Stieglitz

In this image, I see a cold night in the city. I like how the lights in the image stand out from anything else. The lights are the attention getters to the eyes in this photo. In this picture, there is rain and it seems rather cold outside. There are no leaves on the trees and there is it looks like the middle of winter. This photo is part of Alfred Stieglitz's "New York of Transition" photo set. It is said that Stieglitz was trying to challenge the taste of the public and trying to focus on a fuzzy surface and exotic backgrounds. I think that Alfred Stieglitz is trying to say that even in the darkest time, there is light. When I look away and then look again, I initially see the lights. That is why I think that the message is about hope and aspiration. This photo reminds me that bad times don't last forever and there is more good in the world than bad. I feel that there wouldn't be much of a change in the image if there was color. The photo is taken at night and with color, I feel that you would still get the feeling of hope when looking at the image. Still looking at the photo, I am still drawn to lights and it's because of what they represent. Like I said before, they represent hope and desire. Through the "misty atmosphere", Stieglitz says that there is "beauty in every tragedy".

Dorothea Lange

In this photo I see little girls reading books on a hot summer day. This is a candid photo because the children are not posing, they look they don't even know that a photo was taken of them. Dorothea Lange took most of her photos of farmers of children during the Great Depression. She tried to capture the mood of desire and hope. She took many pictures of jobless men looking for work and tried to capture their wandering minds. When I look away and look back, the first thing that I notice is the girl in the middle. The girl in the middle looks as if she desires something. Everyone desires something but this girl looks like she wants something that everyone else takes for granted. The mood in the picture is hope and desire and although some of the kids might not know that those are the feeling they are portraying that's the mood. I feel as if the photo was in color, the same mood would still be given off because of the facial expressions. This photo spoke to me because of the innocence and the feelings the kids show to the audience.
